  • 【Green Island】2025 In Search of the Sea Route

Taitung and Green Island Educational Program

    Introduction

"What ‘hái-lōo’ (sea route) do you take?" — this is a common greeting among fishermen when they meet for the first time.

On the surface, “hái-lōo” refers to one’s fishing method, but in essence, it’s a marker of one’s relationship with the sea.

“Sanasai” refers to a “midway” in oceanic migration in many coastal Indigenous oral histories. Based on recorded interviews, this mystical location is very likely Green Island.

Though we are islanders by geography, modern life has slowly untethered us from the sea.

    Now, it's time to return.
Return to the legendary midway, Green Island.
Return to the sea that calls us home.

Let’s rediscover the relationship between island and ocean, and seek out our own “hái-lōo” along the way.

Join us on this island voyage of discovery!

  • Participants' Reflections

    Lipo

"The underwater world felt like another dimension, unfamiliar yet oddly comforting. Dived into the ocean, time seemed to slow, and my body softened, every muscle and organ at ease.
The world quieted, but never felt lonely. Above, the noise faded away. Below, vibrant blues bloomed into a forest of coral and fish and became a living canvas of serene energy.

Realizing I could swim freely and peacefully in the ocean opened something new within me. It was as if a newborn calf inside me stirred, eager to stand and walk.

This must be the ocean’s greatest gift."

    Section image

    家綺 Chia-Chi

"It didn’t feel like a typical activity. It felt like being led by a local through the hidden corners of Green Island, places tourists never reach.

We were invited to live with nature, learn alongside others, and trust ourselves.

Before I joined the program, I didn't know how to swim. This was my first time ever seeing the underwater world with my own eyes, and I was completely overwhelmed by its beauty. I never imagined I could swim in the sea… but here on Green Island, I did. I hope to keep nurturing this connection with nature, and to listen more closely to the quiet voice inside me.I’m deeply grateful to In Search of the Sea Route, as it helped me rediscover Green Island, understand the natural world, and reconnect with myself. It gave me direction beneath my feet."

    韋涵 Wei-Han

“The ocean will embrace you,” Stanly often said. I didn’t fully understand until I finally found the courage to let go: to trust the sea, and allow it to hold me.

Before that, the ocean was just a vast, unknowable force. Beautiful, yes, but distant and dangerous. But I learned that sometimes, all you need to do is stop resisting.

The sea became a blanket: soft, supportive, and still.

I’m thankful for the gentle guidance of our instructors. They never pushed but offered encouragement that gave us room to try freely and grow confidently.Late at night, lying on the beach, listening to the rhythm of the waves and gazing up at the star-filled sky, I felt it all settle in. The wonder of just a few days, enough to make us say: “We’ll definitely be back."
